With direction by Kyle
Myers
In his charmingly
disarming musical, William Finn tackles a variety of challenging
subjects with wit and intelligence. His characters are members of
the "typical modern American nuclear family": a son, his mother, his
divorced father, his father's gay lover, and the family psychiatrist
who makes house calls and marries mom. The protagonist, Marvin,
leaves his wife and son to move in with his male lover. The
"tight-knit family" portrayed in falsettos is often frayed and
frazzled by life's abrasions, but it is a source of warmth and
comfort, even as its members complain, kvetch and generally disrupt
each other's lives. But no matter what happens the musical is
filled with love, resilience, and affirmation of life. Everyone on
stage is a human being -- feeling, hearing, living intensely
emotional upheavals as honestly as they know how, and coping with
the consequences. Falsettos was the winner of the 1992 Tony Award
for "Best Book of a Musical" and "Best Score"
